Why, when I log into a conference room and then not use the room for a period of time does my microphone stop working and/or I can no longer hear people speaking in the room?

Your system is, in all probability, automatically (and temporarily) switching power modes to save energy.

The two options available are Standby mode and Hibernate mode.

Standby mode is used to conserve energy. When the computer is placed in this mode it switches to a low-power state. All files and applications that you had open remain open but certain devices, including the monitor, hard disks and Internet connections turn off. Everything that is in the computer’s memory stays there. It is not saved to the hard drive. This mode is ideal when you are taking a break for a few minutes but is not the ideal solution when you will be away from your computer for longer than a few minutes.

Hibernate mode takes everything in your computer’s memory and writes it to a file on the hard drive. The computer is then almost shut down completely including all hardware devices, including your monitor, hard disks and Internet connection. You will notice that it takes longer for your computer to go into and come out of hibernate mode than stand-by. Ideally, if you do not want to shut down your computer, hibernate mode is the better choice when you will be away from your computer for more than a few minutes.

Another cause for this problem is manner in which Federal Government, State Government, Local Government and corporate network security is implemented.  Most of these entities design their networks to log-off computers on their networks after a few minutes of no activity on a computer.  This is a good practice.  Imagine stepping away from your computer for lunch, forgetting to log off, and then having someone in your department sit down at your computer and read your e-mail messages... or worse.  This is done to protect you so don't get mad at your system administrators, thank them!  Simply be aware of your computing environment and adapt accordingly and you should not have any problems.

How can I overcome the problems described above?

Simple.  Make sure to press a key on your keyboard every-so-often.  In many instances we recommend doing this every 5-10 minutes.  Problem solved!
